Relative path linking

When setting up a new project, I have been torn between the copy files setting and the link to files setting. What I want is two things:

  1. To be able to have my files in folders according to a system of my choosing, in order to have easy access to them for other uses outside of Tropy.
  2. To be able to make a backup of the data – and easily restore when needed. I may also want to move the full project to a different computer and continue working from there.

It would seem that that the linking setting for a project would be fitting for this use case, but from what I understand, consolidation of files does not work for complex folder structures. I have done some testing and read through the threads on the topic here.

It would be great if Tropy could use a relative path in the linking of images, so that files within the same folder as the tpy-file – including subfolders – would always work no matter where to the folder was moved without the need for consolidation. This is how linking of images works in e. g. Scribus. That way, the full folder could be backed up, restored or moved to a different location or computer without effort.

I suppose that this is similar to how the copy-setting projects work. But then the copied files are not in organised in a way that is useful outside of Tropy, and I would end up with two copies of every file. I would like to avoid that.

So, I am sending this as a feature request. The program seems to be excellent otherwise, and just what I need for my research.

You can enable relative linking already. For this, you need to pick the advanced project type on creation. For an advanced project, make sure all photos are fully consolidated (an empty project will do too, of course) and also make sure that your project file is located in the correct folder (for example, at the root folder of your photo folder structure). Then open the project in Tropy and go to the project settings in the preferences window. You can switch to use relative path linking there.

Wow, I feel stupid for not finding this option. Thank you very much for the quick reply – it works flawlessly!
