Hello, Tropy is crashing while I am importing images. I wanted to test the application so was only importing a single image at a time, I’ve tried drag and drop, and going through the menu to add a new item. I’ve tried jpegs, TIFFs, and screenshots to see if a smaller file would make a difference. I am using MacOS version 11.7.10. I am presented with: “Unfortunately, this Tropy window has crashed. You can help by reporting this issue at GitHub - tropy/tropy: Research photo management”
I cannot even get a single image into the application, please help! Thank you
Hm, that’s odd, did you copy the contents of the file? It seems like some lines are missing in the beginning. There’s also no mention of the crash, please make sure to copy the entire file after the crash happened.
Hi, I uploaded the entire file. After it crashed, I am given the option to “Show Logs”, and I copied the file from here. I’m not sure what other crash file there might be, I don’t know how to save a crash log file after the crash. Thank you
Thanks! This is pretty bizarre, the log is also missing at least a few lines at the beginning. Do you have an Intel or Apple Silicon based Mac? I would uninstall Tropy and then install it again, making sure to pick the appropriate version from the download page.
Hi! Thank you for your suggestion. I have a Silicon based mac and have uninstalled and installed Tropy for Silicon 4 times now, it doesn’t seem to do anything. I don’t know what else I can try.
OK but so the behavior is different than before, right? Previously, it started and crashed on import, now it doesn’t start? In that case, I believe that you had installed the Intel version previously. The fact this way the app was running via the Intel emulation layer could explain the crashes. We’ve also seen some issues when installing the Apple Silicon version over the Intel version. If I remember correctly it had something to do with the system cache. Could you try uninstalling Tropy, restarting your Mac, and then installing it again?
Hi, no it is behaving the same as before. I import an image and it crashes immediately. But I will try uninstalling, restarting my computer, and reinstalling Tropy. Thank you
Hello, I’ve tried uninstalling Tropy, restarting my Mac, and installing it again, but the same crash happens when trying to import an image. I’ve attached the two logs that shows as being created/modified today. I appreciate your help, thank you!
Thanks, the log files are complete this time. You’ve definitely installed the correct version, so this means that the issue is clearly with the bundled libvips image library Tropy uses to analyze and convert the images. We currently can only test the binaries on macOS 13, 14, and 15 so I can’t say if this is general problem on macOS 11 or caused by something more specific on your computer.
The upcoming release will include new libvips builds (though also compiled on macOS 13) that may fix this. In the meantime, the only thing you could trying to compile a custom build of Tropy or you could try installing Tropy v15 or v14 to see if they work.
To use an older version you’d also have to disable automatic updates. You can do this by opening the user data folder (from the help menu). Then quitting Tropy and and disabling the ‘updater’ option in the state.json file (if Tropy is still running it will overwrite any changes to the file).
