error message on sonoma

Hello I updated my Macbook pro to sonoma 14.4.1 and since I did that I’m having this error message when trying to use Tropy :
{“msg”:“unhandled error: Failed to get ‘documents’ path”,“stack”:“Error: Failed to get ‘documents’ path\n at WindowManager.open (/Applications/Tropy.app/Contents/Resources/app.asar/lib/browser/main-CG_pYQw_.js:16791:31)\n at Tropy.showProjectWindow (/Applications/Tropy.app/Contents/Resources/app.asar/lib/browser/main-CG_pYQw_.js:20917:22)\n at Tropy.openMostRecentProject (/Applications/Tropy.app/Contents/Resources/app.asar/lib/browser/main-CG_pYQw_.js:20875:17)\n at Tropy.open (/Applications/Tropy.app/Contents/Resources/app.asar/lib/browser/main-CG_pYQw_.js:20852:57)\n at App. (/Applications/Tropy.app/Contents/Resources/app.asar/lib/browser/main-CG_pYQw_.js:21530:46)\n at App.emit (node:events:517:28)”,“system”:“Darwin 23.4.0 (arm64)”,“time”:1734342137832,“version”:“1.16.2”}

Hi, this seems to be identical to Tropy is not opening - Macbook Pro. Do you have your Documents folder in place?

Hi,
Well, yes and no. I had to upgrade to Sonoma 14.4 and doing this apparently
involved Dropbox being moved to a different location. I didn’t do anything
myself — I think. On my older iMac, which runs on High Sierra, I have no
issues using Tropy and my Dropbox folders

This is most likely related to iCloud syncing of your Documents folder. It’s possible that some default settings changed or that the Sonoma update otherwise changed your configuration somehow. The error itself is caused by Tropy asking the OS for the location of your ‘Documents’ folder, because that’s the default path used to store new projects, and this fails, suggesting that there’s an issue with your configuration. Please check that your Documents folder is there and that your iCloud syncing is setup according to your preferences.

I’m sorry if the question sounds silly but when you say “iClound syncing” (of my documents folder), do you actually mean “Dropbox syncing”? I’m not aware iCloud has anything to do with my archives folders. And I don’t really know what to do with my Dropbox syncing preferences which haven’t changed particularly.
I was wondering if other Tropy and Dropbox users who are on Sonoma are facing the same difficulty as a consequence of their Dropbox folder being moved to a new place called “CloudStorage” from which it can’t be removed.

I don’t think this is related to Dropbox at all, nor is it about where you actually store your project or photos. There are a lot of issues with the Documents or Desktop folders on macOS after OS upgrades. I suspect that it is related to iCloud syncing and Apple maybe enabling new features or changing existing ones with the sytstem update.

At start up, Tropy queries the OS for the system’s ‘Documents folder’ to use this as a default path. It’s not really crucial, it’s just used to make reasonable suggestion where to save new projects. The error above indicates that the there is an issue at the OS-level determining what the Documents folders is. Often, this happens when the Documents folder was deleted or renamed by accident, but since this happened for you after the Sonoma update I’m fairly certain that it’s related to that - and as I’ve mentioned, the likely culprit there is some kind of iCloud syncing. It could also be related to Dropbox if you had Dropbox set up to sync the Documents folder. In any case, to fix I think you just need to make sure that the Documents folder exists where Sonoma thinks it should be.
